WeatherMate — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 27 March 2026
Who we are
WeatherMate is developed by Groupmate Technologies CIC, a Community Interest Company registered in England and Wales. Contact: mbeale@groupmatetechnologies.com
What data we collect
WeatherMate collects the minimum data needed to show you weather forecasts:
- Location data (approximate only): When you grant permission, WeatherMate uses your approximate location to fetch the forecast for your area. It never asks your phone for a precise position, and your position is rounded to roughly 11 kilometres — about the width of a town — before it leaves your device, so it is never precise enough to show where you are. That rounded position is sent to the weather services listed below. If you decline, you can set a location by hand instead.
- Saved locations: Location names you save are stored locally on your device only (in browser localStorage). They are never sent to our servers.
Third-party services
WeatherMate uses the following third-party APIs to provide forecasts:
- Visual Crossing (visualcrossing.com) — main weather data. Their privacy policy applies to data they receive.
- Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) — supplementary wind, solar, and visibility data. Open-Meteo is open-source and does not track users.
- ipapi.co — approximate location fallback only, used if a device fix is unavailable and no location is set by hand.
Your rounded, approximate position is sent to these services solely to retrieve weather data. We do not control how these third parties handle data — please review their respective privacy policies.
What we do NOT collect
- We do not collect personal information (name, email, phone number)
- We do not use analytics, tracking, or advertising SDKs
- We do not create user accounts
- We do not store any data on our servers
- We do not share or sell any data to third parties
Data storage
All user preferences (saved locations, settings) are stored locally on your device. No data is transmitted to Groupmate Technologies servers. Clearing the app's data or uninstalling the app will remove all locally stored data.
Children's privacy
WeatherMate does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. The app does not require registration and collects no personal information.

We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version will always be available at this URL. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above.
